Bharatiya Janata Party State President Sunil Jakhar said the India United States trade agreement has opened new pathways for India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation while firmly protecting the interests of Indian farmers. Addressing a press conference here today, he said the agreement would serve as a powerful platform to take the country to new heights of economic growth.
Sunil Jakhar said the Bharatiya Janata Party understands its responsibility and accountability towards the people, particularly farmers, and is therefore explaining the various dimensions of the trade agreement to the public. He urged opposition parties not to spread misinformation and said Narendra Modi deserves congratulations for securing a deal that safeguards national interest despite complex global challenges.
He said that while the United States President is pursuing the idea of Make America Great Again, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has advanced the vision of Make India Great. According to Jakhar, the agreement fully protects India’s agriculture sector while enabling the country to expand exports of industrial goods to the United States and access advanced technologies where required.
He added that the Prime Minister has transformed difficult global conditions into an opportunity for India. After the agreement, Indian products will face the lowest tariffs in the US compared to competing countries, significantly improving India’s access to American markets and boosting industry and trade.
Jakhar said the agreement opens new avenues for industrial and commercial growth and creates fresh employment opportunities, while a clear protective boundary has been drawn around farmers’ interests. He said that before being a political leader he is a farmer, and as a farmer he can state with confidence that the agreement will not harm any farmer in Punjab. Crops grown by Punjab farmers have been kept outside the scope of the agreement.
He added that while farmers are protected, the agreement will also generate new job opportunities for the next generation from farming families who are moving into other professions. Under the agreement, agricultural goods worth one billion dollars from India will be exported to the United States at zero percent tariff.
Sunil Jakhar said the United States textile market is valued at 345 billion dollars, where India’s share is currently about five percent, compared to China’s share of 25 to 35 percent. With India now enjoying lower tariffs than China, Indian textile industries will gain directly, including the textile sector in Punjab. This is expected to have a positive impact on the state’s economy through higher employment, increased revenue and fresh development.
He said that for India to secure its position in the emerging global economy, it is essential for the country to become the factory of the world. Appealing to people to understand the facts, he said opposition parties are aware of the reality but are opposing the agreement only for political reasons. ![]()
