Punjab Govt to Bring Stricter Anti-Sacrilege Law in Special Assembly Session on April 13

Amritsar: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Saturday announced that the state government will convene a special session of the Vidhan Sabha on April 13 to introduce amendments to the Jagt Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Act, 2008, aiming to enforce stricter measures against incidents of ‘beadbi’ (sacrilege).

The special session, scheduled on the occasion of Baisakhi (Khalsa Sajna Diwas), will focus on strengthening legal provisions to prevent desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib and other religious texts.

The proposed amendments are expected to include stringent punishments, heavy fines, confiscation of property, and provisions to address offences committed through digital platforms.

The Chief Minister stated that the draft of the new legislation is being prepared in consultation with members of the Sant Samaj and legal experts from across the country to ensure a robust and legally sound framework.

He reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance policy, asserting that no individual found guilty of sacrilege would be spared.

He also invited members of the Sant Samaj, including Nihang groups, Taksals, and other religious bodies, to attend the special assembly session.

The Chief Minister further informed that efforts are being made to engage with protestors and community leaders to ensure broader participation in the legislative process.

He assured that the government is committed to delivering justice in pending sacrilege cases and preventing future incidents.

Religious leaders present at the meeting urged the government to expedite ongoing cases and ensure strict punishment for those responsible.

They also appreciated the state government’s recent initiatives, including commemorative events marking the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur and the recognition of key religious cities in Punjab.

The meeting concluded with a collective prayer, reaffirming a shared commitment to uphold the sanctity of religious scriptures and maintain communal harmony in the state. Punjab Today Logo
