Ludhiana: Punjab’s industrial sector received a significant boost as Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann inaugurated Tata Steel’s second-largest plant in India at Ludhiana on Friday.
The project, developed at an investment of ₹3,200 crore, is expected to generate employment for around 2,700 people directly and up to 10,000 indirectly, marking a major step in reviving industrial growth in the state.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister described the occasion as a “historic day” for Punjab, stating that the plant introduces green energy-based steel production through Electric Arc Furnace technology for the first time in the country. He added that the project will play a crucial role in strengthening the state’s economy and providing opportunities for local youth.
Mann emphasized that Punjab’s youth will now find better employment opportunities within the state, reducing the need to migrate abroad even after acquiring higher education. He also highlighted that industries which had earlier moved out due to previous governments’ policies are now returning under the current pro-industry environment.

The Chief Minister noted that the presence of Tata Steel reflects growing investor confidence in Punjab. He said the state government is committed to making Punjab a preferred industrial destination through stable policies, quick decision-making, and strong partnerships with industry leaders.
Spread across 115 acres, the plant will operate using 100% steel scrap, making it environmentally sustainable. It also represents Tata Steel’s first Electric Arc Furnace-based facility in India, aligning with global trends toward cleaner and efficient manufacturing.
Highlighting Punjab’s industrial potential, Mann said cities like Ludhiana have long been known for their entrepreneurial spirit and manufacturing strength. He added that such modern projects will further enhance the state’s position in advanced manufacturing.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that the government has urged the Tata Group to explore starting more international flights, especially to Western countries, to benefit Punjabis living abroad.
Reiterating his government’s achievements, Mann stated that investments worth ₹1.58 lakh crore have been secured in the past four years, creating job opportunities for over five lakh youth.
He assured full support to industries, stating that the government aims to act as a facilitator rather than a barrier. “When industries grow, Punjab grows, and when Punjab grows, the nation grows,” he said.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the new Tata Steel plant will become a key pillar in Punjab’s journey towards becoming a major industrial hub in India. ![]()
