Women Must Lead in Politics, Governance and Economy: Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann

S. A. S. Nagar: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Wednesday asserted that women must take the lead in politics, governance, and the economy, emphasising that those who efficiently manage households are equally capable of running the country.

Addressing a felicitation event for women entrepreneurs in Mohali, he highlighted that true empowerment lies in education, representation, and financial independence, and urged women, especially young girls, to actively participate in decision-making processes.

The Chief Minister noted that although women are excelling in education and various professional fields, their representation in politics remains limited. He said the time has come for women to break this barrier and play a central role in shaping policies and governance.

Stressing the importance of inclusive development, Mann added that greater participation of women is essential for strengthening democracy and building an egalitarian society.

Highlighting steps taken by his government, Mann said Punjab has witnessed a significant shift in administrative representation with the highest-ever appointments of women as Deputy Commissioners and Senior Superintendents of Police. He said this reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring gender equality in leadership roles.

He further outlined various welfare and empowerment initiatives aimed at improving women’s socio-economic status, including financial assistance schemes, job reservations, free healthcare, electricity benefits, and ration support.

Mann emphasised that while such schemes provide support, education and skill development remain the most effective tools for long-term empowerment. He urged women to continuously upgrade their skills and take advantage of emerging opportunities.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the role of self-help groups and entrepreneurship in strengthening women’s financial independence. He said thousands of self-help groups have been formed across the state, benefiting lakhs of rural families, while government-backed startup and dairy initiatives are generating employment and boosting livelihoods.

During the event, 100 women entrepreneurs from across Punjab were honoured for their achievements under the Punjab State Rural Livelihood Mission. Each awardee received a cash prize, certificate, and memento in recognition of their contribution.

AAP leader Manish Sisodia, who was also present on the occasion, said that such initiatives are bringing recognition to women from grassroots backgrounds and will inspire many more to become self-reliant and contribute to nation-building. The event was also attended by Cabinet Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sondh and other dignitaries. Punjab Today Logo
